BLAH. Disappointing.

What is this weird movie about? Shopping malls, easily (and shabbily) constructed suburban building projects, computer dating, lonliness and the pursuit of attention, mass media, metal buildings, computers, evangelist preachers, the disappearance of culture into the principles of the ledger sheet and the skyscraper. These and other topics pervade "Just Stories'" disparate station lines and imagery. David Byrne took on the entire emerging power establishment of the leisurely 1980s in this film. Today the film views like a warning, like a bleak testament to the disappearance of a previous plan of life. Most of us live in the culmination of what this film seemed to prophesize. "Fair Stories" is cultural criticism embedded in campy film.

Byrne had played with the theme of mainstream alienation before. "Don't Danger About the Government" (from "Talking Heads '77"), "The Tremendous Country" (from "More Songs About Buildings and Food"), and "The Road to Nowhere" (from "Dinky Creatures") provide fair three examples. These songs attempt to elevate peoples' perceptions about their immediate culture. So does "Correct Stores".

Not everyone will relish this movie. Sometimes the move moves along like molasses. Some of it feels very dated. It has an intentionally stilted perspective as it plays with well-liked expectations and perceptions. Some of the humor is corny. In short, it's an experimental movie. That said, it also contains moments of absolute brilliance, penetrates some then unknown depths of humor, and has the ability to begin eyes to the bizarre aspects of the culture of 1986 that we have all inherited. It also invites comparisons (in theme) to Luis Buñuel's "The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie". That and the cinematography of the great Texas landscape is handsome.

One scene that really brings out the film's themes is "The Parade of Specialness" in Virgil, Texas (with the Shriners in cars and the 'lawnmower brigade') . This scene is more about the disappearance of shrimp town culture and pride and less about the freakishness of dinky town parades. As the painfully brief parade passes, the crowd stares at the tail raze of the festivities as it slowly fades away into an empty distance. Where are they going? Away, seemingly forever, to nowhere. And swiftly.

Some of the other incandescent scenes include: the fashion indicate with wildly ostentatious and meaningless fashions paraded past gaping mall goers; the dinner with the Culvers ("pass this to our guest") ; the "Puzzlin' Evidence" and "Like For Sale" montages; the film's climax "The Colossal Present". Byrne's intro "The History of Texas" is one of the biggest highlights. John Goodman, in one of his earliest roles, plays Louis with sincerity and sometimes over the top humor. And Spaulding Gray displays only absolute mastery when he appears on the camouflage. His almost surreal introduction to "The Colossal Exhibit" would stand up to infinite viewings.

Lastly, calling "Apt Stories" a "Talking Heads Movie" must be one of the greatest misnomers of that band's career. This was Byrne's movie (the other 3 members only appear in very brief glimpses and in the re-edited nick of the "Wild Wild Life" video) . In 1986 the band stood on a pinnacle of popularity following 1985's "Miniature Creatures". People with money in their eyes likely understanding to capitalize on the band's success (or perhaps that's how the film received funding? ) . Unfortunately, the band also found itself breaking apart at the seams. In an yelp of Rolling Stone at the time, the other band members (most notably Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz) openly attacked Byrne. They depicted this movie as Byrne's attempt to do himself above the band. Weymouth even compared Byrne to a five year aged. Nastiness ensued, and the film "Proper Stories" remains one of the pieces in the puzzle of the band's demise. They released one more album in 1988, "Naked". That was it, apart from a few very cursory "reunions". The DVD re-release fine worthy removes the "Talking Heads" tie-in that created so distinguished tension during the film's modern release. This is genuine. "Upright Stories" stands up better as a "David Byrne" film than as a "Talking Heads" film.

The "in color" section of the title refers to colorized unique newsreal footage venerable in the documentary. It is difficult to imagine a film like "Lonely are the Courageous" being released today. Everything about this near-forgotten 1962 semi-classic seems unconventional. A bittersweet ending, a flawed hero/protagonist, quirky law enforcement officials, character-establishing scenes which proceed slowly though perceptibly, underlying brutality (during a vicious barroom brawl) and a thematic mourning for a time long since passed. And of course the film is in dark and white.

Like vast poetry, the film "Lonely are the Mettlesome" must be savored several times, it's taste acquired, it's ideas earned through notion and contemplation. Quite simply, the film is one of the finest westerns ever made.

A simple myth, though with crisp dialogue and underlying substance, "Lonely are the Dauntless" tells the memoir of the modern-day loner cowboy Jack Burns, brilliantly played by Kirk Douglas. Upon his horse, Burns rides into a dusty Recent Mexico town to visit traditional friends, dodging speeding cars on a highway. He soon discovers his best friend, a childhood chum he passe to carouse with, has been jailed for transporting illegal immigrants from Mexico. In the blink of an notice, Douglas has himself arrested in an attempt to encourage his buddy shatter out of jail.

But his friend refuses, instead choosing the life of a family man, wishing to return to his wife and child as soon as possible. But it is the cramped scenes in "Lonely are the Audacious" that truly give the film its depth and residence. A mild moment as Douglas pauses at the bedroom door of his friend's son, perhaps imagining what his life could have been under different circumstances; a firm hug and kiss with his friend's wife (Gena Rowlands in one of her earliest roles) insinuating past love; a conversation with a mountain squirrel while waiting for a helicopter to hover past; a funny soliloquy while washing his hands discussing the variety of signs hanging from a barbed wire fence; and other telling, comfortable scenes creating a character of fierce independence trapped within a fearful land of convention.

"Lonely are the Daring" harkens relieve to a time of literate drama and well-written dialogue born of the theater and literature. It is also a film that, like its protagonist, slowly moves along the poke until its inevitable, heartbreaking conclusion. But that's the blueprint it should be. Kirk Douglas' character wouldn't have it any other blueprint.

I grew up in N.M., where the fable takes set (Albuquerque), and my dad took me to the Route 66 Faded Town Bridge where we watched the filming of Kirk crossing the Rio Grande on horseback. At that time, it was fair desirable to recognize a movie star.

I didn't truly indulge in the film until I grew up. Here, Tim Burton poured into the soul of Edward Scissorhands the world of an outsider, a creation of an obsolete inventor (wonderfully played by Vincent Label) who passes on before he can enact Edward(wonderfully played by Johnny Depp) . Edward is one day discovered by Peg Boggs, a enthralling Avon lady, who takes Edward home to suburbia, a community of multi-colored houses that could only reach from the mind of Burton and production designer Bo Welch. Danny Elfman delivers probably his most titillating pick up in this relate. The DVD looked like it would be incredile with what was announced, but it would have to lose starts for what I thought: 1) Audio commentary by Burton and Elfman: Both of these guys do not talk all the scheme through the film, (though it does sound a dinky better than Devlin and Emmerich on ID4's DVD & Barry Levinson and Tommy LEe Jones on Men In Gloomy, who chatter on like inane movie theater patrons) . But most of the time I found myself wondering when they would grunt again. Burton probably speaks 12-15 times through most of the movie, but it sounds more like he's having limited afterthoughts. Elfman's audio plays after definite music segments are done (his background music plays over the dialogue so we hear outright how it sounds) . 2) Tim Burton understanding art: after seeing The Tarzan Collector's Edition, this was a letdown, with only about 7 pieces of art (5 concepts of Edward, 1 of the Inventor, and 1 of Edward's position in the mansion's attic) . 3) The featurette talking about the film is also a letdown, as there is nothing that was reall considerable (I was really looking forward to hearing how Stan Winston Studios made the Scissorhands props) . The only frosty important is the interactive menu, made like a pop-up book of the mansion Edward is found in. If you are looking to glean a mammoth movie, glean this DVD. If you are into those that promise wonderful extra features, pass this one up.

"Kite Summery"

The uncut version was filled with uncouth sexual/rape scenes, and disturbing mutter. The violence didn't bother me, but all the child molestation scenes were too considerable. (If you are not bothered by graphic sexual/rape situations then go ahead and by it, otherwise, 21 and up.)

Besides that, the animation was radiant. The voices very well done, giving emotion to the characters. And made you beget you were there inside the movie.

The 5th season was an strange season for Moonlighting. Many fans berate season 4 for keeping David and Maddie apart so long. But at least David collected loved Maddie, and in pursuit of her went through many trials (prison, lemaze classes, parenting books, Maddie's father) . Season 5 starts strong with Womb with a Concept, which revisits the connection between them. In the following episodes, though, there's no connection or chemistry. There's Maddie pulling away, and David feeling dismal and eventually pulling away. In an weird plot, these episodes are reminiscent of Season 1, before anything ever happened between D & M. Except for the white elephant in the room: they hardly even reply their veteran intense feelings for each other. These middle episodes have a few proper moments and some classic Moonlighting comedy bits. But truthfully, getting through them was a bit of a chore, they only remind you of how titanic Moonlighting was when there was genuine tension and passion between D & M.

Things examine up in the last few episodes, when David meets Maddie's cousin Anne. It seems Maddie is finally over David, though it's not definite he's over her. We wonder if he's using Anne to obtain serve at Maddie for engaging on, something that would be depraved. Or maybe David is genuinely gratified, maybe this original relationship is the healthy, stable, loving relationship he never had with Maddie. As other reviewers have said, this situation comes with very few extras. I didn't procure either of the two commentary tracks especially illuminating. The camouflage test was kind of shapely, though. You can peep the chemistry between Bruce & Cybill, even though they hadn't worked together yet.

I'm grateful to have the final scene of Moonlighting to add to my collection, but I am disappointed that there were not more extra features. In draw of extras, all that was included are commentaries on the first and last episodes. In the final episode, the commentary is done by Dennis Dugan. This is the actor who briefly played Maddie's husband. This is the worst commentary that I have ever heard. I listened to the whole torturous episode objective to eye if there was anything he had to say that was worth listening to. There was not.

Again, I am grateful to complete my series of Moonlighting, but it would have been nice if there were more extras of one of my current shows from the 80's.

The Graduate is a classic cult film, and since this movie was based on it, I was hoping for the best, but not expecting grand. I was never more harmful! Jennifer Aniston was refreshing, but I had dry heaves when she slept with a man her mother and grandmother did especially when she view at first he could be her father. That is fair not animated in any station. Kevin Costner was advantageous in his role, but the ewwww factor was too distinguished. Note Ruffalo gave probably his best performance to date. The most surprising performance was from Shirley MacLaine, and she was absolutely amazing. She held her maintain in every scene. It didn't matter who she shared veil time with, she stole the limelight.

I'm paralyzed that so many reviewers here were disappointed in Bette Davis' appearance, wardrobe, lighting and construct up in this film. People, she was playing a insensible broke has been. She looked perfect for this role as Margaret Elliot, the once glamorous Oscar-winning star of the movies. Had she looked like the stylish Margo Channing of "All About Eve", her "Margaret Elliot" wouldn't have been as convincing.

Okay, the script wasn't perfect, but Davis approached this material like a correct professional and gave the role everything she had, which was plenty. Davis never really cared about the diagram she looked and current the fact that she was no Garbo or Jean Harlow. She had played unglamorous parts many times before. Miss Davis was a factual actress, an artist.

The report is "shadowy", yes, but if it had been anything else, it would have ruined this film. The atmosphere created by the director was appropriate for the dwelling. Margaret was in disaster. She was skittish to death and was desperate to gain "abet where I belong." She felt that "one friendly share" was all she needed.

In this role, Bette Davis does everything but hit the ceiling! She pops her eyes, bites her consonents, screams, yells, gets drunk, fights with the police, gets thrown in jail, has the screaming meanies, tells off a couple of frail ladies, slaps faces and smokes cartons of cigarettes. Now, that's acting!

When the Oscar nominations came out, Bette Davis was among the five nominees for "best actress" of 1952. Odd because Joan Crawford had been offered "The Star" and she turned it down flat. Davis had been offered "Sudden Dismay" which she promptly refused. Bette had also been offered "Advance Relieve, Runt Sheba" but didn't feel the portion was suitable for her, leaving Shirley Booth to uncover her stage success on hide. So, Bette current "The Star" and Joan grabbed "Sudden Terror". All three got nominated for the Academy Award! Booth won.

In 1952, Bette Davis' career was on the skids. She, like Margaret Elliot, needed a juicy allotment to attach her support on top. This role didn't do it, but it kept her working throughout the '50s with varying degrees of success. My accepted, besides "The Star" was "The Catered Affair" (1956) .

Despite the criticism I've read here of the film, I enjoyed it and it is an significant section of my film collection. Bravo Bette!

Bette Davis plays a washed up Hollywood movie queen with abandon, and her terrific performance earned her a ninth Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In the role of Margaret Elliot, Bette infuses it with all the angst and self-doubt that a fair has been might undergo.

Margaret Elliot, tiring, broke, down and out, can't earn a role in tinseltown. Drowning her sorrows in alcohol and self pity, Margaret is in serious denial about herself. As she spirals downward, both personally and professionally, a beautiful man (Salubrious Hayden), whom she had given a crash to many years before, comes to her rescue.

When her agent manages to glean Margaret a test for the portion of an older woman, and it looks like she may have a serious shot at it, Margaret, preferring to play the role of the ingenue, lets her ego select over, and she flubs the test. When she realizes what she has done, her world comes crashing down on her, and self realization sets in. She comes to a crossroad in her life. What decision she comes to remains for the viewer to contemplate.

This is a nineteen fifties style melodrama, stark and grim. Bette has no qualms about appearing as a woman who is aging, as she appears with bags and circles under her eyes and has a somewhat jowly and bitter gawk. The wardrobe is mostly drab, and the sets are pedestrian. This all works to achieve, as these accouterments are symbolic of Margaret Elliot's current reality. Obedient Hayden gives a credible performance as Mr. Nice Guy, though there is a scene in which a moment of politically mistaken domestic violence is interjected. A teenage Natalie Wood appears in the role of Margaret's daughter and is perfectly adorable in the role.

This is a film that Bette Davis fans are determined to appreciate.

`Joyeux Noël' is inspired by a real-life event that really happened on Christmas Eve at the several front lines during the First World War, and presents the material in a gorgeous orthodox map, employing the well-handled multi-plot intention, in which we will glimpse the joys and the inconvenience of each character: Guillaume Canet as French lieutenant, Daniel Brühl as German officer, and Gary Lewis as Scottish military chaplain. The cast playing the soldiers are unanimously beneficial, but it is Gary Lewes as tormented military chaplain who is most impressive among them.

'Joyeux Noël' also has a sub-plot about a fair soprano singer played by Diane Kruger and tenor singer (and her husband) by Benno Fürmann. I don't know to what extent the film generalized these historical events it shows, but I believe their worship memoir looks less effective before the more realistic episodes about the solider in trench. Collected these songs are pleasing, and so is Diane Kruger (whose suppose is dubbed by soprano singer Natalie Dessay), showing the power of the music which is timeless and universal.

But to some viewers (including me), smaller things would remain more strongly in their mind. A stray cat found in trench is given different names by the German and the French soldiers. There is a good-natured French soldier Ponchel, who sneaks out of the trench every night to meet his family living late the enemy line. There are moments when the film wears its heart on its sleeve, but it is most touching when it chooses not to be so, showing the details of the life under the low circumstances.

In spite of its wave of sentimentality, `Joyeux Noël' does not forget the reality surrounding the soldiers. It surely has some "feel-good" moments that are often seen in the films about Christmas, but it is also about the humans on the battlefield, and you will realize it when you know the fate awaiting them. After all, it was unruffled 1914, and most people must have view the war would be over soon while we know it finally ended in 1918. The film has a sure, life-affirming message bolstered by attractive songs, but the film may gawk slightly poignant when you imagine how many of them could have survived the war. `Joyeux Noël' is an inspirational French film with several touching songs, a bit of sadness, and hope, too.
With our country at war and Christmas coming up, this seemed like a timely movie to part with my family. I'd heard it was based on loyal events from World War I, a Christmas Eve on which three sides of the war in the trenches laid down their weapons to piece in an evening of peace.

"Joyeux Noel" is not only beautifully directed and photographed, it uses a cast of mammoth actors. The legend revolves around a Scottish priest caught up in the drama, two German opera singers caught between savor and patriotism, and a French lieutenant missing his pregnant, sick wife. Other characters are included as the movie meanders toward the momentous evening on December 24, 1914. For American audiences raised on constant drama, this might seem to lack fireworks; yet the ideas here are potent, made all the more so by their basis in fact. When one man makes a simple sacrifice for the sake of his qualified, he pays a brand that underlines the irony of war.

In conclusion, the movie is a bright tribute to men of three nations who saw past detest and political intrigue long enough to part in their humanity. The proper enemies narrate themselves as those who stick dogmatically to their have agendas. This is a message worth weighing--spiritually and politically--in light of our recent Christmas position.

Both short films characterize the optimism and disappointment post-colonial independence for the African people. Sembene gives a riveting record of intra- and interracial relations; the economic struggle; and social expectations of Africa and Africans. The less horrifying among the two films, "Borom sarret", shows one day in a life of a horse cart driver. He gets into disaster for driving into the white neighborhood, cheated by a wealthy shaded man who abandons him. This is the myth of the powerless masses who were the victims of the European colonizers and their sunless collaborators, after colonization was officially over.

"Murky Girl" is the tragic epic of a handsome Senegalese woman who discovers the reality of racist exploitation in a most vicious manner. Like the "borom Sarret" cart driver, she is completely powerless, but inspiring to France takes away the dinky family protection she had in Senegal. In France, she is a "non-person", and this realisation is too remarkable for her. There are millions of "Gloomy Girls", men and women, who were forced to leave Africa and help as the tree choppers and water bearers of the West. This ongoing crime is largely unnoticed by the affluent society, who only takes explore when "riots erupt" in the bad slums.

The biggest flaw in this chronicle ... is that it makes a 45-year-old man yowl like a child every time I glance it. My opinions on Disney movies vary -- some are obedient, some are almost unwatchable -- but "Beauty and the Beast" is the best work the studio has ever done.

Why do I care for this movie so mighty? I consider it's the music. In some musicals (piquant or live), as soon as a song begins, the yarn comes to a grinding conclude. (Can anyone remember one tune from "Mulan"? ) But in this film, the music by Ashman and Menken advances the chronicle marvellously. It started wearisome like B5 without a lot of definition to the narrative arc, and the special effects were not all that at times... but the explain had already developed a community feel to the well drawn characters, and as usual the dialog was top notch per jms standards.

After the cancellation jms eventually laid out what would've been the future of the memoir arc, and I gotta say that with this cast this is one tale I would've loved to seen reach to fruition.

As for the reference in the following review that the reveal was cancelled due to lack of popularity, this does not appear to be the case at all.

According to jms (and granted its a biased source, but he's not one to modify the facts), TNT objective decided the indicate didn't fit into their type of programming. Audiences were tuning in for that note only, and not staying. So they tried to mess with the point to and then eventually pulled the trip. And because they don't didn't want to search for lifeless if the display were a success elsewhere, they wouldn't let the rights go for any reasonable sum of money.

Crusade was a beneficial reveal with spacious potential and a superb cast. The exhibit grew on me with repeated viewings. Not to be missed - especially by B5 fans.
Crusade had the perfect cast, the perfect creator and distinguished writer (J. Michael Strazynski), fantastic characters, gorgeous music, and it was killed before a single episode was aired. I fancy the creator of the series and dislike those who killed it.

If you have seen any of Babylon 5 or the special movies made for TV related to Babylon 5, you know the quality of production and writing potential Crusade had going for it. Crusade was to be another arc of an unfolding account from JMS within the Babylon 5 universe. In the precious 13 episodes that were completed the viewer gets only a miniature contemplate at what might have been. The Babylon 5 TV Movie "A Call to Arms" was the lead in, not really a pilot, but a contrivance of setting the stage for Crusade with some characters from both series.

If there is justice in the universe, JMS will one day be permitted to accomplish Crusade as he envisioned it. Then the rest of us will stare it, and later when it is available, we will seize it.

This movie was grand. It was very creepy and atmospheric. However, I found myself to be infuriated by the idiocy of the Blu-Ray transfer. I abominate dubbed movies. I own that a movie should be watched as the director intended it to be seen, and in the language it was created in. I always peep foreign language films in the language with subtitles enabled. However, on this Blu-Ray, there is NO OPTION to observe the movie in the new language (French) without going into the special features and selecting it... IN STANDARD DEFINITION! In HD, one can only eye the English or Spanish dubbed version. To recap, a shimmering film and a truly foul shortcoming on the Blu-Ray. I cannot bear the ignorance of the people who formatted this.

I was not too impressed with this film. It was not the color, dialogue, captions, or the lack of a talking dinosaur that let me down- the movie failed to connect with me. For me, it was like watching The Blair Witch Project: you glance because it is something to view and at the slay youre left wanting a cramped more.

Speaking on the space, there needs to be some clarification. American cinema is not universal cinema. European films have their fill arrangement of fascinating the audience. Smart this will set a viewer frustration if they have not seen any imported films. Smart key dissimilarity between American cinema and European cinema, Im calm not clear "Eden Log" would be palatable to all. There could be some challenging takes on symbology, possible allegories, and the role of colors but Amazon is not the area.

I did not witness the English version. Im the type of viewer that watches a foreign film in its new language. This means, like the other reviews position, watching the bad quality version that is listed in the Special Features. To my surprise, the quality was not all that poor. The reason being, I watched the film on a PS3. Like most newer players, it upscalled the quality and fit the image to the widescreen TV. If anyone is to search for this movie on a player that does not upscale but is zigzag up to any widescreen HDTV via RCA jacks, the quality is going to be snide. Its simple technobabble. If a viewer has no exclaim with the higher quality English version then by all means peek that version.

I unprejudiced finished watching the third season DVD plot, and while Stargate Atlantis is collected my popular Sci-Fi present, I was rather disapointed.

First, myth arc failure. I was expecting a great advancement in the anecdote arc concerning the Wraith, but it unbiased didn't happen. Determined, they appear in a few advantageous episodes, but it didn't seem like the memoir with respect to them in particular moved at all.

Second, killing off Dr. Beckett. I really liked him. Maybe I'm dating myself a bit here, but he was kind of like Scotty and McCoy rolled together but with a cooler head. This very lovable character will be missed.

Third, rehashing the replicators. With an entirely current galaxy as our backdrop for this series, why do the replicator thing all over again? It was novel enough on Stargate SG-1, but I was amazed that Atlantis started a memoir arc with replicators too. Are they going creatively bankrupt already?

Fourth, rehashing faded sci-fi standbys, like the "unfamiliar alien thingy or disease that causes valid comrades to launch killing each other". Did the novel Star Hasten do this in the episode "The Naked Time" and wasn't it done again by Star Budge Next Generation as the second or third episode in that series?

Fifth, bringing benefit a whole ship plump of "ancients" fair to end them all off by the waste of the two piece episode. So, the "ancients" have gone from being a expansive and mysterious bustle of humanoids from the past to an expediant position method. We can construct them and kill them at will unbiased to regain and episode or two. Couldn't an "archaic" or two have been spared and ragged as secondary characters? Wouldn't that have been appealing? They could have helped survey the rest of the city. Their ship could have been recovered. There's so grand that could have been done with them that wasn't.

Sixth, lack of character development. Tayla could be a full-fledged warrior princess with a rich heritage and tons of wisdom, but she seems limited more than a delicate (to say the least) face with a big body who never uses contractions (reminds me of Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeanie) and tilts her head a lot. And then there's Ronan the Monotone Macho man who does nothing for me but must appeal to a sure demographic so he's collected there.

Still, the season ended with a special effects spectacular and a tightly written script that showed objective what the Atlantis team is marvelous of. And, of course there's the wealth of special features and commentaries that you bag as piece of the standard package with Stargate franchise DVD sets, and that greatly adds to the value of the residence.

I haven't seen any of season four. Here's hoping.
For my money, the third season of Stargate Atlantis is the best thus far. All of the seasons have been somewhat hit-and-miss, in terms of episode quality, but I reflect season three brings a wealth of much-needed character development. We learn more about the mysterious Sheppard in "Phantoms" and the taciturn Ronon Dex in "Sateda," while the episodes "McKay and Mrs. Miller" and "The Tao of Rodney" provide novel dimensions to the quick-witted and blustery Rodney McKay. McKay's character arc alone -- looking from his modern guest appearances years ago on SG-1 to the newest Atlantis offerings -- is staggering, and David Hewlett greatly deserves the praise he's received for his performance. Outside of something like Firefly, I deem it's rare to contemplate a expose in this genre recognize so remarkable of the characters' backstories, and it's gratifying to view it finally happening for SGA.

Teyla is certainly underutilized, and I hope that this season will bring novel depths to her character. From what I've heard, there is definitely the opportunity for that to happen.

If it weren't for movies based on books today, many of us would never become acquainted with classic literature. Silas Marner is a gem of a movie, obviously based on a classic, and after seeing it, I understand why the book is required reading in many English classes. I myself have never read the book, and therefore relish becoming acquainted with it through this movie.

The setting appears to be in the 1600-1700s England. Silas Marner is wrongly accused of execute and is exiled from his community. When he arrives in another village, he becomes the mysterious weaver of delicate cloth, who lives alone and rarely speaks to anyone. The squire from whom he rents his cottage meanwhile, is providing for his opium-addicted wife that he has secretly married. He keeps her and their baby daughter hidden from the public in a small apartment in the village. Struggling to the squire's mansion one night to declare her existence to his family, the woman dies in the snow, and Silas Marner finds the toddler in his cottage. Immediately he takes to her, and convinces people he should adopt her. The following section of the movie of his developing relationship with this adorable shrimp acress is precious.

Marner lives frugally, raising the child, but when she is 16, the squire steps in, and Marner and his daughter must gain a decision that will test their relationship. There is a subplot concerning the squire's wayward brother whose actions affect all their lives, forcing all the characters to a turning point.

Ben Kingsley's acting is suited as he goes through the different periods of his life, and the movie does a heavenly job of portraying the era. The movie, like the book, may not be top-draw, but like the book, it also deserves classic region.

After reading George Eliot's masterpiece, Silas Marner, I rented this video from my local library. I was presently surprised to view that the movie followed the basic pattern of the book. Though there were a few variances, for the most fragment Ben Kingsley did a masterful job of bringing Silas Marner to life. Kingsley's portrayal of the traditional miser was pleasing. However, the best acting came from the young lady who portrayed the heroin-addicted wife of Godfrey Cass. The like between Eppie and Silas was almost felt by the viewers. Kingsley is a most worthy actor, and this is one movie that you should lift for your bear collection. Waste

I've read a few reviews comparing 'Ghost in the Shell' to 'The Matrix'. Personally I don't assume it's an suitable comparison at all. Judge 'Blade Runner' here. It has the same kind of atmosphere that made BR such a cult movie and it deals with the same subject. Compared to most other animes out there, GITS may seem a small tedious, but if you're the kind who likes to have some brain activity when watching an anime, then you'll probably like this. One other thing that caught my attention is that, like 'Blade Runner', it flows along like water. You could easily commence watching it and obtain yourself loosing track of time. It is short tough, only 82 min. It's a shame really, because with the great amount of sub-plots note in Masamune Shirow's novel work they could easily effect an anime with well over 2hrs. That aside, the animation is some of the best you will ever view. Kusanagi's battle with the tank at the ruin comes to mind. Very sleek. The music is also very odd. It's kinda of a foul between ambient, electronica and recent age. It's not for everyone be warned. Unlike normal music scores, Kenji Kawai's obtain does not bring the action to life, quite on the contrary. It's always point to very softly in the background to the point of you forgetting about it. It creates a sense of detachment, or contemplation that, in my belief, works sizable for this kind of movie, however I can scrutinize why some people would disagree. All in all, this one is a apt classic to be ranked along the side of Akira. Catch it!

Image Quality: Very pleasant for the most fragment. The anime's shadowy atmosphere and uninteresting colours transfer well to DVD. The blacks aren't as capable as I would hope and at some points the image quality is, for some reason, a tad worse (the intro shots for example), however times like these are few and far between. The whole image is very soft and I hoped the edges would be a limited more arresting. I'm not positive if this is because of the transfer or the movie itself because I haven't seen 'Ghost in the Shell' in any other digital format and I certainly aren't going to assume for reference the VHS edition *grin*. But don't let what I said achieve you off, as for the most fragment you'll be more than glad at the image quality. For an example, when the optic cover kicks in and you have the 'rainbow' accomplish (if you look it you'll know what I'm talking about) all the colours are very well defined and very crisp and you'll accept yourself thinking how chilly it looks. On another shot of Bateau inside his car more to the extinguish, you can study water drops on the side window... try doing that on VHS. Very nice.

Sound Quality: When I bought this DVD I wasn't expecting anything special on the sound department. Boy, was I immoral. The sound comes in two flavours: English 5.1 and Japanese 2.0 The stereo version is nothing to write home about. It's adequate... impartial. The only valid thing about it is that you regain to hear the Japanese philosophize acting which is always nice, other than that (if you've got a 5.1 setup) honest forget about it. The 5.1 version is where the sound really comes to life. It hasn't got an intricate and complex soundstage like 'Twister' for example, but it determined delivers the sound with a punch. Your subwoofer will adore you every time you pop in this DVD. From the roaring explosions, machine gun fire or the deep drums on some parts of the musical obtain, the bass is always deep and sure. Music is all around you, coming from all channels most of the time, so this at least creates an provocative atmosphere, especially when the music is of the ambient type I've described. Extras: Well, they're better than most DVD I've seen. The search is also symbolized when she surfaces, and the absorbing image of her rising up to meet her reflection, representing her fair self. A very colorful, thought-provoking, one-of-a-kind existential, soul-searching anime, with Kusanagi despite its cyborg dominance showing some human traits.

Many MANY years ago, being a dedicated Werner Herzog fan, I went to examine the documentary, "Burden of Dreams" which was based on the many trials and tribulations of filming his astonishing movie, "Fitzcarraldo" in the jungles of Peru. "Wrath of Gods" could be its Icelandic cousin. There seem to be sure films that fight against their creators. Their directors, crew, and cast must give all they have, and sometimes even a bit more, in order to ogle their dream realized. Indeed, there are moments during WOGs when the forced smile on director Sturla Gunnarsson's face melts into something gloomy and desperate; those are among the most lovely moments in this film, because that sadness and desperation added to the haunting (and I mean that in the most graceful and primal plot) beauty of what became "Beowulf & Grendel". There is no joyful, storybook ending here; the film did poorly by Hollywood standards, but so what?! The film is ultimately accurate to the prose, lawful to the raging, frozen, breathtaking Icelandic landscape where it was filmed, and good to the legend of its anti-hero, Beowulf. It is almost an anti-Hollywood movie, and sometimes, who could ask for more than that? Thank you to the director of "Beowulf & Grendel", Sturla Gunnarsson, to Jon Gustafsson, who filmed its filming, and to the unbelievable cast. Absolutely loved this movie. It has SOUL.

I can't hold what I'm seeing...a solid hour interview with Gerry Butler AFTER a grueling workday on the location. I'm amazed at his patience under the visible stress of an aching head and body after braving the Icelandic weather to shoot this revealing documentation. How remarkable more can he do to display his appreciation for the help of his fans worldwide? His behavior speaks volumes about the depth of his character and his commitment to excellence and dedication as an actor. His star is definitely rising and he is indeed 'paying his dues'...he is not shocked to shoulder the tough roles, transforming himself into a character in ways that startle directors and producers alike. When he signs on to play a role they can be assured of this: they will net noteworthy, worthy more than their money's worth from the likes of this humble, towering Scotsman who has his feet planted solidly on the ground and who has restored the grandeur of moviemaking. Don't gawk for his dazzling face in the gossip rags as he's rarely caught up in their sordid stories...he's too faded to glean swept up in their tasteless diatribes...he's too busy concentrating on his career to cater to the crowded flashbulbs. The law profession lost an gracious attorney when he situation his sights on becoming an actor; can't you impartial discover him in the courtroom making his case summarization! Others here have done a beautiful job of reviewing this expedient film, so I'll focus briefly on the DVD from BBC/Warner. The video and audio transfers of Our Mutual Friend are quite wonderful. Although there are no subtitles, this DVD is closed-captioned. In general, this DVD is of similar quality to other BBC Dickens adaptations that have been released on DVD (e.g., Oliver Twist (1999) and David Copperfield (1999) ) .

One reviewer below complained that 45 minutes or more of the unique film are missing from this DVD. I have no view where he got that belief. It must be some kind of misunderstanding or perhaps a gross copy because my copy clearly has the entire film (divided into four episodes, two on each side of a two-sided disc) . The all-important climax and ending scenes of this 351-minute production are all there to be pleased. Highly recommended for Dickens fans and fans of period dramas in general.

"Our Mutual Friend" finds Charles Dickens at his very darkest and most intense providing many unforgettable characters ranging from the very rich to the very terrible. Retched and vile, good and superior occupying all social structures with the desire and acquisition of money along with the ramifications thereof being a recurring theme

This BBC production is righteous. The acting is resplendent. This production keeps this rather complex memoir lively along splendidly.

I had the privilege of seeing this helpful film last week at the AFI Silver Theater, which recently ran a month-long tribute to the gradual, mountainous director Elia Kazan. Kazan is distinguished for his collaborations with a young Marlon Brando, directing the rising star in three films during the early 50s: "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Viva Zapata!" and the masterpiece "On the Waterfront." Many film critics effect "Baby Doll" correct leisurely "On the Waterfront" when ranking Kazan's filmography. Having seen it, I would likely do the same (though I haven't seen all of Kazan's films yet) .

Eli Wallach, who plays Silva Vaccaro in "Baby Doll," was on hand to introduce the film at the AFI Silver. He spoke for about 45 minutes and, though he's in his 80s, had the audience (about 40 or 50 of us) roaring with laughter. I was amazed at how many top actors and directors he's worked with. He spoke mainly about "Baby Doll," which he says is his approved film.

Here are a few things I learned from Eli Wallach about "Baby Doll": His hands were NOT anywhere arrive Carroll Baker's private parts during the notoriously erotic swing scene, as reported in many a film review at the time. Rather, they were resting on a dwelling heater; though "Baby Doll" takes spot in the heat of summer, the film was shot during winter. "Baby Doll" is based on two one-act plays by Tennessee Williams: "27 Wagons Burly of Cotton" and "The Unsatisfactory Supper." Anyone familiar with Tennessee Williams knows that his writing is very southern and very steamy. "Baby Doll" may be the steamiest, most erotic thing he ever wrote.

The owner of a private cotton gin, Archie Lee, has his hands chubby with "child bride" Baby Doll, who sleeps in a crib and won't let her husband touch her until she turns 20. With her birthday in a few days, Baby Doll, played by the impossibly-cute Carroll Baker, is threatening to "retain" unless her aging, doltish husband starts raking in the dough. After their furniture is hauled off, Lee, played by Karl Malden, sets fire to the fresh cotton gin that's been taking away his business. Silva Vaccaro, a firey Sicilian businessman played by Eli Wallach, vows to real revenge on the person who burned down his gin. Suspicions lead him directly to Lee's doorstep where, over the course of an afternoon, he proceeds to kill the man's life.

The heart of the movie is Vaccaro's seduction of Baby Doll. No flesh is ever shown, nothing explicit is ever uttered and I possess there's only one kiss in the entire film. Regardless, this is some of the hottest, most erotic footage in American film. The dialogue, the acting, the plan it's directed: the overall accomplish is like watching passionate sex, yet it's simply two people talking - and they're not even talking about sex! To me, this type of filmmaking is magical, when the director conjures something out of thin air that isn't even there.

"Baby Doll" was highly, highly controversial upon its release in 1956. It was condemned by The Legion of Decency, an organization of the Roman Catholic Church, who claimed that it was base. Because of the hype, it was withdrawn from over 70 percent of U.S. theaters before its premiere. Several film critics at the time called it the most pornographic film ever released by a film studio. "Baby Doll" is a mountainous film that now ranks among my favorites of all time. It's not only sexy, but very amusing, well-acted, well-written and expertly directed. It may seem a cramped dated to most original viewers, but I personally deem it holds up quite well (but then, I do behold a lot of used films.) If and when "Baby Doll" is produced for DVD, I hope the studio considers Eli Wallach for the audio commentary.
This review isn't of the astronomical movies contained but the DVD site and their respective presentations.
first..let me say the bonus DVD "Tennesse Williams South"...is exceptional..its a film made about and with him in 1974 and besides his believe readings of his work, which are illuminating, it features legends like Burl Ives and Jessica Tandy re-creating his dialog..simply timeless!
now..onto the Discs/Movies
the bonus featurettes are all very well done however, seemingly shorter than they should/could be. By that I mean...they have unusual interviews with Karl Malden and Eli Wallach for BABYDOLL and Rip Torn for Sweet Bird of Youth and the ever resplendent Jill St John for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, and yet the amount of face time these loyal stars of the films in expect fetch is barely a line here or there? Not that the featurettes aren't obliging...they are..it fair seems they could be a could 10minutes longer each...
now...the opposite quandary is in the second disc of Streetcar Named Desire....the feature length (90min) Elia Kazan: A directors Whisk is amazing..its a decade or so faded but was done while he was detached with us and his participation raised it above the level of talking heads documentaries of the day. The curious thing is that the current featurettes on this disc feature procedure too mighty culled from the aforementioned feature. I don't understand....WB has incredible featurettes on all the movies that seem truncated and then BLOATS out the Streetcar featurettes with duplicate material from itself? Only the novel footage of Karl Malden saves the Streetcar featurettes from their acquire plagerism.

Now..the films themselves are all in very genuine shape considering they go assist half a century. I wasn't a particular fan of Tennesse Williams..but after viewing all these films and the bonus film...i most certainly establish him in the genius category and am looking for more.

Also, the press is making a immense deal about Marlon Brando's hide test which is being included in the Streetcar DVD bonus features...its only a curiosity, not fabulous by any stretch. What is far more gripping is Karl Malden's gorgeous memories of his friendship and admiration for Mr Brando....truly touching and mezmorizing. Malden is a fancy of an actor who starred in more pleasing films than any but the most ardent fan would know as he was usually second billed...but he IS the star of this position.

Great American films and unlike Universals shameless packaging..WB continues to reveal these types of films lovingly with extras..oh yeah..and the commentaries aren't unpleasant either...mighty to appreciate in this plot.

I finally saw this film recently after reading an editorial that mentioned this film in regards to how the racial stereotypes perpetuated in Minstrel shows continue this day in any rap video you inspect. A few years ago, I remember coming across an advertisement for a Minstrel indicate that my church congregation set on in the 1950s. I've been meaning to recognize all of Spike Lee's films someday, as I like the statements he tries to invent in his films. He has amassed an inviting body of work, though some were more successful than others. For me, "Malcolm X" and "Do The Legal Thing" are his best works, and this one would be third, ahead of "Jungle Fever". I loved the performance of Michael Rapaport as the frigid talking head honcho of CNS Television, who has an expressive device with words and sounds more "sunless" than the faux knowing nerdiness of Damon Wayans, who plays Pierre Delacroix, which we learn in the film is a pretentious name he gives himself to distance himself from an embarrassing past. I also liked Jada Pinkett Smith in this film, as Delacroix's assistant who doesn't agree with the direction he's taking with his display conception.

Unprejudiced seeing the disgusting collectibles from the past century (such as the "jolly n----- bank" or the Aunt Jemima dolls) is a reminder of our racist past. We mustn't forget even as we depart on to greater inclusion and burying stale stereotypes, allowing people to be who they are regardless of run.

I want to give this film 5 stars, but because the film veers into a weird tangent for about 10 minutes advance the waste of the film, I simply idea Spike Lee got slothful with how he wanted to demolish this film. It was a cheap and inactive contrivance to go, even though he explains his reason on the commentary track. I disagree, because if done proper, his ending would have punched up the meaning of this film. I'm at least overjoyed that the montage at the demolish saved this film on a somewhat redeeming mark. If anything, this film serves as a reminder of our unique history and how overt racism really was. The film succeeds as an awakening to the forms into which the Minstrel Explain of the last century has morphed into something a minute bit different, but accomplishing the same devastating conclude. I know I'll never be able to glance at another rap video in the same diagram again. Thank you Spike Lee!
I have recently decided to finally show myself to the work of Spike Lee, putting his entire body of work at the top of my DVD rental list, and Bamboozled was the first one to come. I must say that I can not wait for the rest of them to advance in. The only negative aspect of this film is something that several others have pointed out...the negate of Damon Wayans' character. Through the film it did launch to grate on me as I heard it, seeming too forced and unreal. However, Wayans did a solid job of portraying a man who, having made a sinister mistake of judgement, slips into denial and ends up rationalizing the error to himself until he believes he actually did the just thing. The supporting cast was also very strong, Savion Glover is a very talented tap dancer, and Tommy Davidson shows that he is more than honest a comedic actor. Michael Rappaport pulled off what was a very unsafe role, as it is so easy to play the role of a white man trying to be murky and turn it into a cliche of ignorance. Instead, he was very believable and very tasteless and obscene, a flawless performance.
As for Spike Lee? I thoroughly enjoyed his direction. The graininess and edginess of the quality of the cinematography is a graceful character of his work. It has a definite style that can be identified as his work immediately. He wrote a very considerable sage, showing several sides of the struggle of the sunless man trying to be successful in this day and age. Sometimes, it seems that the only blueprint to succeed is to sell out in one plan or another. In the destroy, the deaths are metaphorical, symbolizing the cultural death of those who sell out, that they are eventually ostracized from both the white and the gloomy sides of society. The fable is a Shakespeare-style tragedy, rife with internal conflicts, a main character with a fatal flaw, and an ending with permanent finality. There really is not a hero, nor is there a villian, as none of the characters are one-dimensional. Their conflicts are never sunless and white, no pun intended. They are complex problems created from the characters' choices and their circumstances. It is easy to glimpse how their mistakes are made. We can enjoy that we would not have made the same choices if we were in their plot, but that is easy to say from the outside looking in.
In this film, Lee told the chronicle of several staunch and human characters, presenting a struggle that he sees every day. He withheld judgement of these people, and did not force his belief on the viewer, allowing the viewer to choose who was legal and who was rank. I recognize forward to seeing the rest of his work.

Everyone has a accepted "stinker" in their home video collection, and this is mine. My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts. My friends cringe and turn the other blueprint whenever I mention it. And my family offers me "special medication" if I try and fetch them to search for it...again.

But what can I say; I appreciate this film. It's banality, shallowness, and out-and-out unscientific advance to unique man's changes and discoveries throughout the eons is impartial hilarious to glance. It's a ridiculous film, and so should be watched with that in mind. Why?

The fable is about Atouk played by veteran Beatle master Ringo Starr, who is kicked out of his caveman tribe by the muscular and massive chief Tonda (probably lineman John Matuszak's only role on film, I'd guess) because he's in esteem with the chief's woman, Lana (a VERY busty Barbara Bach) .

Once out on his have, Atouk begins to perform fresh friends. They include Lar (Dennis Quaid), Tala (Shelley Long), Gog (Jack Gilford), Ta (Cork Hubbert), and a gazillion others. Among this rag-tag grouping comes the ability to stand up straight, how to cook a dinosaur egg, how to ruin a rather astronomical dragonfly by using someone's face (my well-liked piece in the film...but I felt dreadful for Dennis Quaid), the discovery of fire, music, drugs, homosexuality, and weapons, and impartial about a million years of evolution and discovery all wrapped up in one short, foolish film.

So call me a moron. Go ahead, it's okay. But this film is a ample no-brainer, laugh-a-minute flick.

Now I'll go bellow in the corner for while...
When I first saw this movie many years ago I fair loved it. Today it will seem kinda comical but hey this movie is and always will be a classic in my collection. Too terrible there are no special futures in this DVD and no special edition will likely advance out.

Ringo and Dennis are immense, and Shelly is surprisingly not annoying.

You will follow these cavemen all the map from learning how to hobble erect, recognize fire & drugs, ignore an english speaking Japanese and, one of my current moments in any movie, the discovery of music.

Thank god DVD technology came to keep all time classics like this one.
